Preparing to code in the military (4) Will it work?
I checked whether what I built in parts 1–3 will actually work in the military, by reading the rules for soldiers' phones and looking for first-hand accounts. SSH into my home server basically works; whether Tailscale works, I'll only know once I'm at my unit.
Contests worth entering during military service
If I go into the Air Force, I'll serve from January 2027 to October 2028. I looked up the judging criteria, competition rates and odds of running again for 12 contests a soldier can enter, and ranked them by how well they suit me.
How Air Force IT Soldiers Get Their Units
How unit assignment works for Korean Air Force computing specialists, what the scores are made of, and which units to aim for or avoid, pieced together from community posts.
Preparing to code in the military (3) AI-based server management
I looked up the industry standard for server monitoring, split my home server's monitoring into an internal check, a heartbeat and an outside check, and had an AI on my Mac check, fix and report back when an alert comes in.
Preparing to code in the military (2) A home server
My Hetzner server kept running out of resources, so I bought a used mini PC for ₩270,000 and turned it into a home server.
First place in the Air Force first round
I passed the first round in first place for the ROK Air Force technical specialist track (computing). 94 points, with a cutoff of 78.
Preparing to code in the military (1) The phone
To keep coding from just a phone during military service, I switched to a Galaxy Z Fold7 and set up Tailscale and Orca.
